At Vision Personnel, we take pride in working with skilled professionals who are passionate about their roles in the construction industry. For Women in Construction Week, we spoke with one of our Contractors, Jess, who works as a forklift driver, about her journey in the industry. From following in her family’s footsteps to navigating challenges as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Jess shares her experiences, the lessons she’s learned, and her advice for other women looking to build a career in construction.

What inspired you to work in construction?

I come from a family with strong ties to the construction industry, so I’ve always been familiar with the trade. Seeing their work firsthand sparked my interest, but what really drew me in was the idea of working outdoors rather than being confined to an office. I wanted a career that was hands-on, physically engaging, and full of variety.

How long have you worked in the industry?

I’ve been in the construction industry for four years now.

What do you love most about your job?

One of the best parts of my job is the people I get to meet. Construction brings together individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life, each with their own skills and expertise. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s a different technique, an innovative approach, or insights from someone who is in a different trade.

Have you faced any challenges as a woman in construction? If so, how have you overcome them?

Yes, there have definitely been challenges—many of them mental rather than physical. Confidence plays a huge role in this industry. There can be moments where you feel underestimated, but perseverance is key. Over time, I’ve learned to trust in my abilities and not let doubt get in my way.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in construction?

Believe in yourself and your abilities—confidence is essential. At the same time, always remain respectful and professional, but don’t be afraid to set boundaries when necessary. Construction is an ever-changing environment, so adaptability is key. Embrace challenges, stay open to learning, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. There is absolutely a place for women in this industry, and the more we continue to break barriers, the more opportunities will open up for future generations.
